Elephant family

el9el2el3el10el8

My most complicated mammoth ivory carving with 10 elephants. The carving is done on the piece of mammoth tusk that is 16 inches or 400 mm long. The artwork is done in deep relieve with some elephants almost free-standing. This was very challenging and during the process of carving sometimes internal cavity appeared, but were incorporated into the carving. It made the process more interesting. My special thanks to Marty who commissioned this work and gave me the opportunity to make this wonderful creation. Special thanks to my wife Lei who took this wonderful pictures.

Panther 2

This time I carved again the free-standing panther. What I like about this statuette that it is very dynamic. The panther is moving, the muscles are bulging, it’s mouth is growling. Something dramatic is about to happen.

To create this piece of art I used a very fine piece of fossil walrus ivory with different kinds of coloration. You can even see some traces of blue. Eyes, teeth, mouth, all carved with great detail. Fossil walrus ivory presents it’s own unique challenges to the artist and should be carved with great attention. The material came from the ancient tusk of walrus that was found on the shores of Bering sea by native Alaskans. The base of the carving is made of the bark ivory of wholly mammoth tusk with it’s own unique coloration. This material came from Siberia.

This elaborate and unique ivory carving is Sold. Please contact me if you like me to carve one for you.

Owl

I got one time a piece of fossilized walrus ivory, a very tip of the tusk with very beautiful colors. The image of an owl fitted it perfectly right. As the base I used a round section of mammoth tusk with nice creamy colors. Both pieces of ivory, walrus and mammoth created a very nice composition. It stands 3-5/8″ (92mm) high and 3″ (76 mm) wide at the base.
